[Day 6 - Early Night] Master of Bones

Postby Dapper Dog » Fri Jun 15, 2018 7:34 am

Event Type: Side Event
Power Cost: 0
Participants: Unlimited
Timeslots: Early Night

Description: The Festival of Bones, some quasi religious tradition of the desert peoples, but the most important part is the Race of the Vusa, where skilled riders parade for the crowds and test their mettle especially those that challenge the Path of Bones… are you a bad enough rider for the Path of Bones?

Rules: Before you can begin the race you must impress your beast, you must do the dance of the vusa!

Vusa-Beast.png
Vusa-Beast.png (189.35 KiB) Viewed 5619 times

Dance of the Vusa: This is very coordinated and dramatic dancing where one must whoop like a vusa and impress the creature! This is a Coordination or Athletics check at Average with a setback due to vusa being very picky. If this roll is failed, you will suffer a setback die on all race rolls because your vusa is not impressed with you.

Next you must call your vusa, give a Whoop!

The Big Whoop: This is a Leadership check at Average, if successful the vusa will obey your commands and you can ride. If failed you can try to race by forcing the creature but all roll difficulties are upgraded once.

Now that you have your vusa it is time to race! This will consist of four Survival rolls and picking a course. The Leisure Course, the Rider’s Course, and the Path of Bones. It is bad form to wear armor during the race, so don't be that person.

Leisure Course: The most popular course for tourists and native alike you parade around the parade grounds and have great fun the difficulty is Easy, you have a great time but this is non-competitive. At the end you are rewarded with a bottle of spirits.

Rider’s Course: This is a more difficult course for experience riders and the Difficulty is Average, failure at a roll on this course will have you fall and sustain 5 wounds and 5 Strain per fall. The wounds can be reduced by soak, the strain cannot. Completing the Rider’s Course with 12 total successes over the 4 rolls will allow the rider to keep the vusa as their own.

Path of Bones: The most dangerous course, the difficulty is Daunting for each roll and a failure means one falls and sustains 10 wounds and 10 strain, the wounds can be reduced the strain cannot. This is not the path for the faint of heart along a narrow chasm if one completes it with 12 successes they are rewarded a vusa, considered a Master of Bones, and the talent below:

Master of Bones: Once per session may ignore any one Critical Injury for an encounter.

Rewards/Outcome: Fun and enjoyment!

Postby Azura Mora » Sat Jun 16, 2018 6:30 pm

This whole thing seemed stupid to Azura, but there was a potential free thing for entering, so why not try?

Turns out she was very good at dancing for the Vusa though! Her co-ordination was on point, and the Vusa was very impressed. In fact, the largest Vusa there, a giant all-white one, stepped forward and looked her in the eyes.

Well now, I guess I have your attention

"Hah, me and you are gonna win this thing!" Azura exclaimed, giving the beast a thumbs up! The beast...yawned, and flopped down, uninterested in the puny human girl now.

"Oi, get your butt up! We have a race to win!" She poked it a few times. The Vusa made some strange sound, with Azura assumed was agreement. Really, it was the beast telling her to get lost, but it realized the human wasn't smart enough to work this out after she had climbed on the beasts back and kept tugging on the reigns.

Reluctantly, it got up.

Woman and beast, as one, charged to the course! Azura felt like she was flying...because she was. The beast had stopped after getting some momentium, and Azura had flown off and landed hard on her back.

"Ow..."

That was the end of her race

(2 wounds taken after natural soak. 5 strain taken)

OH MY GOSH! SUCH FASCINATING ANIMALS!!

Lyseil was completely taken with the vusas, and oo'ed and aa'ed over them, taking pictures and being overall excited about this!

"You dance for vusas?" the desert person asked.
"Uhh... Sure! I learned some dancing yesterday!"

And Lyseil showed them some of the jizz-dancing. But the vusas would have none of it. The desert people liked it more though, and brought out one of the really nice looking vusa for her to ride.

"It will be just like riding a thranta!" She had done that many times back home. ... Except this was nothing like riding a thranta, but she did manage to take the nice leisurely ride without any catastrophes.

Niall studied the vusa. The vusa studied him. Niall, rather appropriately, thought back to his school days, and the dances they had there. Of boys and girls lined up on opposite sides of the room, occasionally shooting glances at each other. The key, Niall realized, both then and now, was boldness.

And so he danced. What he lacked in coordination he made up for in enthusiasm, and having a very nice cape. The vusa was impressed with him. Even moreso when he spoke commandingly to it. If he could handle commanding Mandalorians, he could handle commanding a vusa.

There was just one problem...

Niall sat straight and proud atop his surprisingly cooperative vusa. "I've, ah, never actually ridden a thranta." He admitted. The vusa started off, Niall gritting his teeth as he held on desperately.

At least his cape billowed dramatically when he fell off.

"The locals race? Hells yeah ah'll be there." Garth had told Jenkins when the mechanic told him of the late night race. When he got there and saw what they were racing though, his jaw dropped.

"How....primitive." Still Jenkins had gotten his payback for all the extra work Garth had created for him as he laughed while spectating, Garth couldn't back down now, although damned if he knew how to ride these beasts.
---------------------------------------------
He watched some of the locals dance, and tried his best to imitate the moves and rhythm, surprisingly he was far better dancing for the beasts than he was in the moshpit a few weeks ago and attracted a small crowd of creatures to pick from.
Dance of the Vusa. Coordination + Trust: 3eA+2eF+1eB+1eS+2eD 4 successes, 3 Dark Side
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
---------------------------------------------
But unfortunately he picked the wrong one, trying to mount the beast it snarled at him, which Garth took as a sign of spirit and alpha maleness. unfortunately his mount would prove more stubborn than he had anticipated.
The Big Whoop: 3eA+1eB+2eD 1 failure, 3 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImage
----------------------------------------------
He hit the lead early, his natural talents coming to the fore as he steered the Vusa by sheer force of will through a couple of tight turns and established a blistering pace.

---------------------------------------------
As they neared the halfway mark, Garth was almost out of sight of his nearest competitor, urging the beast on to higher and higher levels of excellence.

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
Triggering Improved Shortcut
Running total: 4 strain, 7 success
---------------------------------------------
But then the creature had had enough, Garth tried to steer left, but the Vusa wanted to go right. They compromised and crashed into a boulder in the middle of the course. The Vusa looked none the worse for wear. In fact, Garth could almost swear it was laughing at his plight as several racers passed them.
Riders Course 3. Survival + Trust + Shortcut: 2eA+3eB+1eD+1eC 2 failures, 2 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
Fall
Running total = 9 strain, 7 success, 2 wounds
-------------------------------------------------------
And then the finish line loomed up, Garth doubted he would cross in the top few places after his earlier stumble, but little did he know that his mount had even more devious plans in mind. As they approached the end of the race, it pulled up in a dead stop, catapulting Garth forward over it's head, past the finish line and into a clump of stringy cactus right near a smiling Jenkins.
"Ya bastard." Garth cursed at the technician before he lapsed into unconsciousness
Riders Course 4. Survival + Trust + Shortcut + Destiny: 1eA+1eP+3eB+1eD+1eC 2 failures, 3 advantage

Cole had pulled his face mask up over his mouth and nose, the high-collared jacket buttoned all the way, goggles on. Over his fatigues a thermal cloak to ward off the night's chill, hood covering his distinctive blonde curls. He wasn't much of a dancer, that was to be expected, but he seemed to have an okay rapport with the unimpressed vusa. Too bad it wasn't enough to make up for his lack of experience. He fell, more than once, but he was pleased that he was able to finish.

Re: [Day 6 - Early Night] Master of Bones

Postby Durasay Mixo » Sun Jun 17, 2018 8:56 am

Durasay was feeling a bit of the party, himself. Normally a reserved individual, after the excitement the day before, and feeling much better, perhaps from the stims, or the drinks he had partaken of at this point, he decided to show just comfortable he was in the cold weather. Standing before the Vusa, in just slacks and boots of his officer's uniform, the Pantoran grinned, as he began his dance. While it could be considered stylish, and skilled, for most other beings, the Vusa was, needless to say, not impressed.

But, it was then that Durasay let out a loud whoop, his natural charisma and talents showing, as the Vusa, while still prickly, certainly was going to let the former officer, now senator, give commands and ride him. Climbing atop the beast, the sensible thing would have been to take the leisure course, after all, it had been some time since he had last ridden one of the beasts of burden of Pantora, and a Vusa was quite different indeed.

But he was feeling good, and at the cheering of the locals, he had taken the riders course. "Yee ha!" He called, spurring the beast on with his boots, charging along to try and make good time. Except that he had been thrown from the beast, slamming against the ground, though his training had shown through. He was able to roll with the blow, coming out not as bad as one would think.

Again, and again, Durasay was thrown, yet he did not stop. Each time, remounting, and finishing the lap.

At the end of the course, he climbed off of the prickly, willful creature, and patted it's neck, before slowly walking away, violet-purple-indigo bruises showing on his bare flesh, while he rubbed his neck. He might not have put on a good showing, but it had been quite fun.

Re: [Day 6 - Early Night] Master of Bones

Postby Rav Devaroo » Sun Jun 17, 2018 5:16 pm

Now this looked like fun! After the assorted trials of the day Rav could get behind the idea of a race, although he kinda wanted to run it himself...

First up was impressing the Vusa. It was a cute little monster yes it was. It was also easily impressed by Rav's Shistavanen-style breakdancing. A few spins and a backflip had the beast on his side.

Unfortunately his mount could sense the sarcasm dripping from its rider's "Whoop" and they got into a serious argument about which of them was in charge just as the race began...

The plucky engineer managed to navigate the first section of the Rider's Course with little trouble, it all seemed simple enough. That was until the Vusa decided to throw him off in the middle of the second section. They stood growling at each other for a good 30 seconds until Rav punched his mount right in the snout. "That's enough outta you pal." With the dominance hierarchy settled once and for all the rest of the race was plain sailing. In a classic example of showboating Rav crossed the finish line standing up on the Vusa's back, cheering. He didn't place highly enough to be awarded a mount of his own, but then where would he have put it?

This looked like it would be fun. It was certainly something Galen was eager to participate in. He all but ran to the vusa he was directed to.

"Why, hello there! Aren't you magnificent!" He approached the animal carefully, circling it as it watched him, slowly edging closer until he could rest his hand on it. It seem happy enough with him.

"Whoop!"

-cough- -cough-

The cool dry desert air caught in Galen's throat, but his yell was heard. He was ready.

Confident that he and his mount were in sync, Galen guided his vusa to the Path of Bones. At first, everything went well, they moved quickly and easily along the chasm. Then, they slipped. Galen fell, but managed to pull himself up. Then, he fell again, and did not.

Postby Aran Enfas » Tue Jun 19, 2018 3:07 am

Aran could not bring himself to stay away from a race. Even if it was with quadrapeds instead of swoops, he rather liked the sleek look of the Vusas. Also, perhaps this was best -- the Masters had specifically forbade him from any speeder races, but he was sure they would approve at this effort in, ah, community outreach.

Aran is reasonably graceful, if not at all practiced in dance per se. His whoop, however, is somewhat lacking. The vusa eyes him with mixed appraisal.

Aran starts off the race strong, but things go sharply downhill in the second half. Literally. He ends up crossing the finish line grinning but somewhat bloodied and woozy. Looking around, he notices Galen collapsed nearby, and hastily hands his vusa off to a handler to go give the other man a stimpack.

OOC: Forgot the trust boost! Rolled it all at the end. Wasn't anywhere near 12 successes, so I kept it simple and didn't add *more* boosts for advantage, just healed strain.
