There were 9 figures, the Beast, the Counselor, the Craft, the Disciple, the Dowager, the Imperator, the Knight, the Outcast, and the Vizier. The object of Shah-tezh was to make an inescapable and indefensible attack upon the enemy Imperator, while protecting one's own. Each piece upon the demesne had its own special role and associated moves. Rekara explained the main rules of the movement of the figures, and how it was meant to move and capture the other's main figures. For example, the Vizier could only move along the diagonal of the demesne, but had no limit to how many steps it could take. However, the Knight could only move two steps at a time, but in any direction at all.
"We should try the game then. Together we might learn how o play this game." She started out by moving her first piece forward, shifting the white counselor forward. It was the first game so there was not much thought on the movements that she was doing. "There are many varieties of this game, did you know? With different boards, different number of pieces, different movements, and yet it all is aimed for the same, to get the head of the other's pieces. And yet I do not feel like this is the same in real life, since princes, viziers, and even the people might still resist against the opposing army. Very much like this occupation in Bankor, and how the Resistance is aiming to destroy the occupating army fully."
